Uncle B

I can't agree with the use of sewage or factory farm waste simply because there are too many toxic chemicals in them. That is very unfortunate because the soils could use this valuable organic matter.

I do agree with the major shifts needed in energy production along w big improvements in energy effciency. Not convinced about nukes -- simply to expensive and too complicated.

North Americans will regret not having processed sewage and factory farm effluents, and all compostible garbage to top-soil enhancing fertilizers and bio-gassing all to consumer gases. The poor supply of low cost fuel and the high cost of food production in North America causes the great long lines of unemployables particularly States-side. America is suffering the high cost of foreign liquid fuel as we speak! Asians bid against American fist manipulated dollars for oil with solid Yuan. It is time for America to concentrate on Solar, Wind, wave, Hydro, Tidal, Geothermal, Bio-mass, Nuclear, energy sources for a totally new electric lifestyle and to forsake the v-8 gasoline guzzling engines of the past! Time for electric bullet trains, huge gardens composting, bio-gassing, reactors for power to the people! dependence on oil alone is a very bad thing - Even China has nuclear/electric sourced, electric bullet trains and a complete product producing infrastructure without oil dependency, up and running! America is behind big time! Our soils are tired - they even salted good American farmland in California to satisfy Accountancies equations for ROI - such evil for Capitalism's sake - We will Pay! Just think! Our forefathers emigrated here to enjoy just such farmland and we allowed it to be dessicrated! Yankee Doodle is at the end of his rope and dangling! What next? Who you gonna bomb the living shit out of to cure your sloth at home?

The use of the ancient Amazonian wisdom of Terrapreta... (Biochar, now) + Permaculture, IS THE FUTURE, as David Montgomery said in a recent private email.

Quite possibly the only viable future, after peakoil.

Hi Stephen,

Now I'm an optimist. Soil can be created. I suggest you take a look at Rattan Lal's work at Ohio State University or education groups like Holistic Management. Meanwhile, I'll try to get farmers to "grow topsoil" and get them paid for doing it. It's ecological and economic.
