The Win-Win of Investing in Independent Environmental Journalism

Independent media coverage performs a vital service when it comes to important environmental stories. A glance at any mainstream media reveals their focus is on politics, sports and celebrities. Largely absent is informative stories that help people become aware of and understand crucial environmental issues.

“We need people like you. In tough economic times, where information flow is increasingly channelled and controlled, you perform a simply critical role. Hang in there. You are an admirable role model for the future.” — E. Ann Clark, Associate Professor, University of Guelph.

Climate change and the declining natural environment that sustains us are the most important issues humanity has ever faced. The few media trying to bring this to the attention of decision-makers and the public. The few that do, such as IPS, have very little money to pay their writers, editors and photographers. The fact is our current economic system does not support independent environmental journalism that rings alarm bells and explores solutions that can help prevent our children and grandchildren from living on a chaotic, polluted and exhausted planet.

That makes investment by individuals crucial.

audio-bugListen to a radio interview where Vancouver, Canada’s RADIO ECOSHOCK suggests that people need to “adopt environmental journalists” if the public is to get any information about the impacts of climate change, the future of the oceans, and why leading scientists are hitting the streets to demand policy changes

  2. Hi Josi,!8000 pounds! that’s an incredibly expensive course. I don’t know any funding sources — wish I did. Thomson is one of the richest corporations on the planet. What kind of foundation are they running if they aren’t providing this kind of training for free or nominal cost.

    good luck

  3. Steve,
I understand the need for financial support, and the work you are doing is important. How can I make a contribution to the fund? For example, would US$100 help? I also have an important news story to tell an understanding reporter who sees what I am driving at:

CLIMATE CHANGE: Time For A Slightly Mad Idea?

Dan Bloom is not a scientist and he does not have a PhD in anything.
He’s a 58 year old American journalist who has lived in Asia for the
past 15 years, working as as a copy editor at severael English
language newspapers in TOkyo and Taipei, and now he has started a new
career as a global warming blogger calling for — are you ready for
this? — polar cities to house survivors of cliamte change in the far
    distant future.

Bloom, a graduate of Tufts University in Boston, says he is not a
doomsayer, and that he is actually an optimist about life. But after
studying global warming, both its actviists and its denialists, he
says he came to the conclusion that the world needs to think seriously
    – now — about planning, designing, locating and building model polar
cities. He has created a blog about this idea, and asked an artist to
create some architecutal blueprints as well.

    • Kushagra, India would be an excellent place to write about environmental issues and your background will be good use. Take some basic journalism courses and that should be enough to get you started. I can give you the contact info for IPS editor in Delhi.
