Thank you for the interesting and disturbing article on Salamanders disappearing. I came upon a “Western Skink” in interior B.C. this summer, and we had a good little chat. I found it so odd that it was up in the woods, but I guess that is where they live; the water was 1000 meters away. Apparently, they are rare now.
I have allways been interested in these little creatures.
After growing up in Central Alberta in the 1960′s, and spending part of my boyhood of chasing after garter snakes and frogs, I have noticed the decline in frogs and salamanders in that area. They used to be abundant along the Red Deer River, but they are not to be seen much anymore. Some suspect the acidification caused by oil and gas industry activity are to blame for their decline.
Thanks for raising awareness of the plight of the amphibians.

What’s happening to salamanders and frogs is disturbing. I’m glad you had a little chat, more of us need to have that chat, that connection so we can be more aware of our impacts on the natural world.
Virtually any one who spent a childhood outside will have noticed changes/declines over the past few decades. We need to talk about it, not w nostalgia but with alarm for we are witnessing the unravelling of the web of life.
I’ve posted the article w some pixs here
